Foundations
Most health research captures a moment. Foundations captures a life.
Who We Are
Foundations is a longitudinal citizen science platform that turns the health data you are already passively generating through your iPhone and Apple Watch into a meaningful contribution to science, while building a personal health baseline that grows more valuable the longer you participate.
Privacy
Health data is deeply personal. We recognize the responsibility that comes with collecting and managing it. The entire platform is built around privacy by design, meaning your data is protected by the architecture itself, not just a policy. (Learn more about our privacy and security)
Protocol
At its simplest, participation means a baseline assessment and passive data collection with periodic check-ins. Foundations is designed to be minimally disruptive, but participation scales to users’ preferences. For those who want to go deeper, we offer targeted research modules across neurology, cardiology, sleep, mental health, and more, each with its own schedule, matched to your health profile. View a full list of potential data points here.
Outcomes
Foundations follows your health for years, not visits. For participants, that means a clearer picture of your own health over time, real results from the studies you contributed to, and knowledge of where you are within your cohort. For researchers, it means a longitudinal dataset built on years of real world data across a population that actually reflects the diversity of people's lives. We are building a repository of uniquely valuable evidence that changes what questions are even possible to ask
Why Now?
-
“We’re talking about lots of terabytes of data about you, which will someday accumulate, from the womb to tomb, in your personal cloud, stored and ready for ferreting out the signals from the noise, even to prevent an illness before it happens.”
— Eric Topol, The Patient Will See You Now
-
"You should have complete control of your data. It's not oil. It's not a commodity."
— Sir Tim Berners-Lee on the 30th Anniversary of the World Wide Web
-
"This requires restoring to individuals not only the data that describes them, but also the ability to decide how it is used, by whom and for whose benefit. Otherwise, the digital age will not be post-colonial, but colonial in another form."
— Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas
Interested in shaping the future of longitudinal health research?
We're currently seeking researchers to participate in our protocol development Delphi study.
If you're not a researcher but are interested in participating when Foundations launches, we'd be happy to keep you updated.
Whether you're helping guide the platform's development or waiting to join as a contributor, your voice can help build a more participant-centered approach to health research.
