Who We Are
Founded by Christopher Metts, M.D., we are small family-run company with a hope of putting your health data back in your hands and making it work for you. With advanced privacy and security architecture, your data is never treated as a product to be sold, and you have complete control over who it is shared with. Our goal is to create a platform that allows for users to better understand their health trends and see when something may be wrong. If you choose to participate, you can contribute to a game-changing longitudinal citizen-science database, opening doors to meaningful research that has previously not been possible.
About Foundations
Foundations turns the health data that your iPhone and Apple Watch are already collecting into your own health baseline. It offers a running picture of what's normal for you, which may include cognition, activity levels, sleep, and other health stats. This information becomes more useful the longer you participate, so you can see trends and identify possible concerns. That same baseline can also contribute to health research. Most health research only identifies when something is already wrong, in a clinic, after symptoms start. Foundations gives researchers a picture of health as it actually happens, day to day, in participants’ real lives. This data helps them ask better questions and find answers that traditional studies often miss, improving patient care.
Privacy
As a small family business, we understand that health data is deeply personal, and we take the responsibility of collecting and managing it seriously. Foundations is free to use, and that's not an accident. Most of the data comes from information your phone and watch are already collecting, so there's very little for us to store or manage on our end, which is what keeps the platform free. Your data lives in your own personal cloud, not ours. You decide what stays private and what, if anything, you want to share with our team or with authorized researchers. That choice is always yours. We don't provide your data without your say so, and never to advertisers (Learn more about our privacy and security)
Protocol
At its simplest, participation means a baseline assessment and passive data collection with periodic check-ins. We're building that baseline now, together with doctors, psychologists, and healthcare researchers, using the Delphi method: a structured process where expert panels reach consensus on what information matters most, and how best to collect it. This baseline helps us flag meaningful patterns or differences for you over time, and suggest research modules you might be interested in joining. You'll always choose what you want to answer and what aspects of health you would like to focus on.
Foundations is designed to be minimally disruptive, but participation scales to your preferences. For those who want to go deeper, we help you organize data across neurology, cardiology, sleep, mental health, and more, each with its own schedule, matched to your health profile. Outcomes
Foundations follows your health for years, not visits. For participants, that means a clearer picture of your own health over time, real results from the studies you contributed to, and knowledge of where you are within your cohort. For researchers, it means a longitudinal dataset built on years of real world data across a population that actually reflects the diversity of people's lives. You can be a critical part of building a repository of uniquely valuable evidence that changes what questions are even possible to ask.
Why Now?
-
“We’re talking about lots of terabytes of data about you, which will someday accumulate, from the womb to tomb, in your personal cloud, stored and ready for ferreting out the signals from the noise, even to prevent an illness before it happens.”
— Eric Topol, The Patient Will See You Now
-
"You should have complete control of your data. It's not oil. It's not a commodity."
— Sir Tim Berners-Lee on the 30th Anniversary of the World Wide Web
-
"This requires restoring to individuals not only the data that describes them, but also the ability to decide how it is used, by whom and for whose benefit. Otherwise, the digital age will not be post-colonial, but colonial in another form."
— Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas
Interested in shaping the future of longitudinal health research?
We're currently seeking researchers to participate in our protocol development Delphi study.
If you're not a researcher but are interested in participating when Foundations launches, we'd be happy to keep you updated.
Whether you're helping guide the platform's development or waiting to join as a contributor, your voice can help build a more participant-centered approach to health research.
